Mr. Lo is a very rich landowner and he travels a lot to collect the rent from the farmers. Soon after collecting rent from his tenants, Mr. Lo is robbed and drowned by his greedy sedan-chair bearers. He becomes a lonely ghost who haunts the lake where he was murdered. A child named Liao-ran comes to the lake to catch fish for his sick mother. There he meets the ghost of Mr. Lo, and they soon become good friends.

The ghost knows that he can live again if he steals a person's body. He got only three times to find the substitute or he will be a ghost forever. A young woman passed the lake. Liao-ran frightens her away therefore the ghost doesn't take her body. At first the ghost is angry at Liao-ran, but when he learns that the young woman is about to be married, he understands why Liao-ran saves her.

The ghost then captures a student, intending to drown him and take his body. But before he is killed, the student asks the ghost to take care of his mother after he is dead. The ghost is moved by the son's devotion to his mother and releases him.

Then the two sedan-chair bearers who murdered Mr. Lo pass the lake. The ghost starts to fight with them and plans to kill them. Liao-ran tries to break up the fight and falls into the lake. He is unable to swim so the ghost stops fighting to rescue him. The ghost loses his last chance to be reincarnated.

The sedan-chair bearers, shaken by their narrow escape, promise to mend their evil ways. The god of the dead recognizes the good ness of the ghost and installs him as the Magistrate of the Dead, to protect society from troublesome ghosts.

The Devil has created a mirror, in which he can spot reflections of all sinister intentions of human kind. Proud of his creation, the evil creature once tried his invention to challenge the authority of God, but along the way he was deterred by an unknown strength that prevented him from reaching heaven. In the struggle, the mirror fell to the ground where it shattered into thousands of pieces spreading shards of evil around the world.

Xiao Kai, a little boy living in a small village, accidentally came across one of the mirror's slivers when it landed in his eye. In that instant, Xiao Kai, turned mischievous, and worse still he lost all recollection of everyone and everything around him. One day, he met the Snow queen when playing in the park who took him away and commanded that he piece back together the shards of the broken mirror. All the people of his village believed that the little boy was dead and would never return again.

Jier, a little girl Xiao Kai grew up with, was the only one who believed that Xiao Kai was still alive. Determined to find her best friend, Jier leaves her village on a challenging adventure in search of the famed Snow Queen's Ice Palace, where she believes Xiao Kai to be. Thanks to help from Florescent Grandma, Chilly Grandpa, and a zany group of keystone robbers Jier finally finds the ice Palace where Xiao Kai lives.

Upon seeing Jier, Xiao Kai remains antipathetic, bringing Jier to tears. With all hope lost Jier croons an old song the two had sung together in their childhood which melts Xiao Kai's frozen heart, forcing him to warm tears that once and for all remove the shard of mirror from his eye. Reunited with Jier once again, Xiao Kai is free to feel the benevolence of human kind for ever after.
